Belgium -- Flanders (Low Countries). Gouden Gehelmde Leeuw, or Lion d'Or, ND (Ghent, struck c. 1370). Fr-157; Gaill.-214; Delm.-460; Coll. Vernier 13. 5.41 grams. Louis de Maele, 1346-1384. Lion seated left within ornate gothic baldaquin, wearing crowned helmet with elaborate lion-headed crest; in exergue FLANDRES. Reverse: Cross fleury with "D" at center, "F-L-A-N" letters within the angles, all within poly-lobed tressure. Choice, Mint State with a detailed strike, on a full large flan, again with fully legible and complete legends. Rare; an exceptional piece. NGC graded MS-63.

Brussels is the main city of Flanders in the northern part of modern-day Belgium, while Ghent has always been one of the more picturesque spots of the region, a place where diplomats would meet -- where, for instance, the treaty ending the war between Great Britain and United States was signed in 1812.

Belgium - Liège. Ducat, 1654. Fr-324; KM-74 (Liege); Delm-357. 3.46 grams. 22.16 mm. Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, 1650-1688. Crowned quartered shield within middle shield - beneath, crook and sword. Leg: M - AX. HEN.ELEC.COLEPS - LEO. BA - D. Reverse: Legend on decorated tablet. Leg: DVCATVS / NOWS DVC/ BVLLONI/ ENSIS, date below square. Rare. NGC graded MS-61.

Liege was a powerful bishopric in the 17th century, with far greater holdings than the present city in Belgium. In fact, Liege controlled much of western Belgium and parts of France. The silver coins of the bishopric of Maximilian Henry are quite common, but the gold coins are almost never offered. The legend on the reverse tablet found on the reverse indicates the Dutch influence.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Lot 2643
Belgium. Lion d' Or of 14 Florins, 1790 (Brussels). Fr-402; Delm.-221; Witte-1155; KM-51. 8.32 grams. Insurrection of the United Belgians, 1790-1792. The Belgian Lion standing left, head turned right, holding sword and shield inscribed "LI BER TAS". Reverse: Rayed Sun encircircled by the coats of arms of the eleven rebellious provinces. A wonderfully even, detailed strike. Lustrous to matte devices on reflective fields; both dies already showing light breaks. Some trivial abrasions scattered in the fields, nevertheless an especially fine example of this rarity. Even rarer in this grade. Handsome rich gold toning, with light areas of red. NGC graded MS-64.

Belgium was at this time under the control of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, who alienated the Belgians to the point of rebellion. Ironically, soon after the lands were re-conquered, they were taken by Napoleon's armies. The symbolism here makes it a marvelous piece from the Age of Revolution.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Bohemia (Wallenstein). Ducat, 1631. Fr-145; KM-61. 3.70 grams. 21.94 mm. Albert Wallenstein (Duke of Friedland and Sagan), 1625-1634. NGC graded MS-62.

Wallenstein is one of the most fascinating characters of this period. Born of a noble family, he was appointed general of the Imperialist forces by emperor Ferdinand II. A great general, he won numerous battles for his commander. Unfortunately, his ego was as great as his abilities, and he so angered his officer corps, that they assasinated him.

Bolivia. 8 Escudos, 1779 PTS-PR (Potosi). Fr-1; KM-59. 27.01 grams. Charles III, 1759-1788. Draped bust of Charles III right. Reverse: Crowned arms, Order of Golden Fleece around. Fully struck up, with semi-cameo devices on bright fields. Very lustrous. Very Rare in this grade; the finest example seen in many years. NGC graded MS-63.

Charles had almost a pathological hatred of the British, and opposed them politically whenever he could. He opposed Britian in the French and Indian War (Seven Years War), and for his efforts, lost Florida, but gained the Louisiana Territories from France. He really wanted to recapture Gibraltar, since it was just a few feet from his coastline, but the British kept the territory.

Bolivia. 8 Escudos, 1797 PTS-PP (Potosi). Fr-14; KM-81. 26.96 grams. Charles IV, 1788-1808. Draped and cuirassed bust of Charles IV. Reverse: Crowned arms, Order of Golden Fleece around. Bold strike, with proof-like fields on obverse. Light contact marks, mainly confined to right obverse field, plus a lint mark on the bust, otherwise very lustrous and choice. Rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-62.

Charles was a terrible king. Very physically strong, he loved wrestling, and would find the strongest countrymen available to compete against. He loved hunting as well, but that was about all he craved. He had no interest in affairs of state, and left this to his ministers. Probably his wisest decision was his abdication in 1808.
